Deadline (Inspector Ikmen Mystery 15) (Inspector Ikmen Series)
Deadline (Cetin Ikmen, #15) by Barbara Nadel
Or perhaps because of it — we seem to like our detectives a little grouchy: think of him as the Morse of Istanbul. So, given that his idea of a good night out is to sit with an old friend smoking and drinking — or, failing that, just to sit drinking and smoking — it is little surprise that the prospect of a murder mystery evening at Istanbul's famous Pera Palas hotel, along with the city's great and good, fills him with horror. Mind you, nowhere near as much horror as the events of the actual night itself.
Of course, anyone picking up a detective novel and reading that there will be a murder mystery evening, knows instantly that it will end up with someone really being murdered.
About This Item
That is exactly what happens here, but then events spiral even further out of control. Ikmen is always good company, and Barbara Nadel's writing, as usual this is her 15th novel in the series captures the other-worldly though sometimes seedy atmosphere of Istanbul. But by setting the story in The Pera Palas, the marvellous old-world hotel that was a favourite of Agatha Christie, the author sets up certain expectations.
Indeed, she compounds that by making Christie's room No a crucial part of the plot.

And with the mystery evening developing rather like an Ottoman version of the country house murder, it seems we are going to have a classic Christie-style puzzle, but with a knowing twist. Sadly, that prospect is cast aside and the resolution of the story seems to have marched in from another book altogether — which, in a way, it has, because it hinges around events in one of Nadel's earlier stories in the series.
If you don't know it, you are likely to be left floundering.

It's a shame that Nadel's engaging writing, authentic array of characters and well-orchestrated set-up, is let down by a disappointing finale. Follow Telegraph Books on Twitter. Love puzzles?
